AS OF 1/27/25: PROPOSED BILL LANGUAGE IN FURTHER DEVELOPMENT WITH SPONSORS

This legislation would add a new chapter to Idaho Code for requirements of labeling alternative animal proteins derived from non traditional livestock production or wild game harvest. You can read full bill text HERE.

Background: The introduction of new products into the consumer marketplace that are produced from plant based or cell cultured sources with the intention of replacing or replicating meat has increased rapidly in recent years. The proposed legislation seeks to require upfront, clear, and conspicuous text that identifies such protein if sold in Idaho.

Why is this important to cattle producers in Idaho?

Labeling of products can be misleading in many situations, but particularly as it relates to the reference of meat or beef. It is important that a distinction remain between these further processed or potentially lab grown proteins and BEEF, which is a single, authentic source of high quality protein and derived from livestock. Idaho cattle producers take pride in caring for their livestock, stewarding the land and producing a nutritious source of protein through high quality beef.

Does ICA support this proposed bill?

ICA has member policy which dissuades labeling of plant-based proteins as beef, as well as policy supporting opposition to alternative proteins being permitted to use nomenclature associated with protein derived from livestock production.
