STATUS : THIS BILL HAS BEEN HELD AT THE REQUEST OF THE SPONSOR.

Idaho statue currently requires that veterinarian practices in the state be conducted as sole proprietorships. This legislation stands to make a change by striking the negation of corporate ownership of veterinary practice in Idaho. You can read full bill text HERE.

Background: As the need for practicing large animal veterinarians grows, one of the barriers to entry has been reported to be the start-up costs that a veterinarian graduate faces, which are in addition to potential student debt load. Changes to this legislation may allow for rural communities seeking to establish a co-op style practice to do so, somewhat relieving burden of lack of veterinary care availability.

Why is this important to cattle producers in Idaho?

Veterinarian care of animals in production agriculture is a necessity to successful animal welfare. With limited availability and access to large animal care, many producers are subject to exponential financial impact due to transport of animals to seek care, prolonged illness of animals or in some cases, loss of said livestock.

Does ICA support this proposed bill?

With the recognized need for more veterinarians in large animal and rural practice, ICA is supportive of legislation that has the intention of removing barriers to entry, as a way of providing support for livestock producers across the state.
