Alternative Animal Protein Labeling

This legislation establishes labeling requirements for alternative animal proteins sold in Idaho and prohibits use of traditional meat terminology. You can read full bill text HERE.

Background: The introduction of new products into the consumer marketplace that are produced from plant based or cell cultured sources with the intention of replacing or replicating meat has increased rapidly in recent years. The proposed legislation seeks to require upfront, clear, and conspicuous text that identifies such protein if sold in Idaho.

Why is this important to cattle producers in Idaho?

Labeling of products can be misleading in many situations, but particularly as it relates to the reference of meat or beef. It is important that a distinction remain between these further processed or potentially lab grown proteins and BEEF, which is a single, authentic source of high quality protein and derived from livestock. Idaho cattle producers take pride in caring for their livestock, stewarding the land and producing a nutritious source of protein through high quality beef.
